SERVICE: Environmental Management Environmental Management

Issues around climate change are firmly entrenched in the global business and political agenda due to concerns expressed the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Biophys understand the challenges facing organisations and will work with them to find new and innovative ways to limit their impact on the environment, as well as their Carbon Footprint.

Biophys provides the following solutions:

  • Development of an Aspect Register: Biophys will perform an analysis of all of a company’s processes. This includes everything from cooking food in a canteen or producing and packaging a product, to printing an invoice. In addition, other factors contributing to the register comprise an assessment of: resource consumption, land usage, land contamination, water and air pollution, landfill leachate and gas production, recycling, non renewable energy usage and impacts on climate change.
  • Develop practical and effective recommendations to reduce the company’s environmental impact. Biophys aims to create solutions which will be cost beneficial for the organisation, either by reducing waste or by the recovery of funds as a result of recycling initiatives or process improvements.

Greenhouse Gas Inventories or Carbon Footprinting

Many organisations are now aware that man-made CO2 emissions will result in a number of implications if left unchecked.  It is postulated that human activities are increasing the concentrations of CO2, CH4, N2O and halocarbons at a rate higher than the Earth’s natural Carbon sinks can remove them from the atmosphere. This results in a net increase in GHG presence in the atmosphere, leading to the increased global warming effect of these gases. These organisations realise their contribution to the net increase in GHG (Greenhouse Gas) and their responsibility to manage this problem.

Biophys will assist with these challenges by:

  • Developing a base-year or follow up Carbon Footprint using the World Resources Institute (WRI) Carbon Accounting in the Manufacturing Sector protocol.
  • Analysing the direct and indirect GHG emissions focussing on CO2 equivalents. This analysis can be expanded to focus on other greenhouse gases if required.
  • Providing practical recommendations on how to reduce a company’s Carbon Footprint.
